Welcome to Jack's Packs
Theatrical Sound Design from Start to Finish
Far too often, sound considerations for a theater production end up at the bottom of the list. Frequently, the job is relegated last minute to a volunteer who doesn’t have any other assignment (or experience).
If the sound work is awarded to an outside firm, the sound tech shows up the week of the show, sets up some sound equipment and operates the mixer without a script using the “who’s onstage now” approach, frequently missing opening lines…

Here at Jack’s Packs we take a very different approach: We get involved in the sound design well before tech week. We like to sit in on rehearsals to:
-
mark entrances & exits of each actor on a script to be followed during the show
-
measure actors for wireless belt packs to be worn under all costumes
-
make lists of sound effects and search out or create the precise effects needed
-
discuss special wireless needs with the costumer (wigs, revealing dresses, etc.)
-
discuss “wireless” constraints with the choreographer to work out solutions
-
observe and implement special “directed sound” needs:
-
sound from onstage radio instead of from out in the house
-
sound near an onstage telephone or making it actually ring
-
special mic placement to pick up dialog in a back hallway, etc.
-
area mics to pick up choral voices as well as “wired” lead actors
Jack’s Packs prefers to get involved with a production early on to heighten the audience’s sound experience and to make it just as convincing and spectacular as the rest of production.
